2022North Carolina Humanities CouncilIredell County Public Library Statesville, NCA$20,000paidTHE LIBRARY HAS RECENTLY PARTNERED WITH LOCAL CITIZENS, THE CITY OF STATESVILLE, THE NAACP, AND HISTORIC STATESVILLE TO INITIATE A RESEARCH PROJECT FOR THE OLDEST AFRICAN AMERICAN CEMETERY IN THE TOWN IN ORDER TO DESIGNATE THE LOCATION AS A HISTORIC SITE. RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT THE CEMETERY IS THE LARGEST IN THE COUNTY FOR FORMERLY ENSLAVED PEOPLES, WHICH HOLDS SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL VALUE TO THE LOCAL AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY. THE CEMETERY HAS FALLEN INTO DISREPAIR OVER THE YEARS AND MANY STONES ARE MISSING, SO THE EXACT NUMBER OF BURIALS IS UNKNOWN. THE LIBRARY WOULD USE FUNDS TO HIRE A WELL-REPUTED COMPANY TO CONDUCT A GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR SURVEY OF THE PROPERTY TO VERIFY THE NUMBER OF BURIALS AT THE SITE. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE GPR SURVEY WILL ALLOW THE SITE TO QUALIFY AS HISTORIC AND THUS PRESERVE THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY IN STATESVILLE.
