WE WILL COLLABORATE WITH AN AMERICAN HISTORY TEACHER IN THE COUNTY'S CAREER AND TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY AND WITH THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM'S K-12 SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM SPECIALIST TO CREATE ONLINE LESSON PLANS AND ONLINE ACCESS TO PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIALS THAT CAN BE USED BY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS EITHER AT HOME OR IN CLASSROOMS. WE WILL ALSO DEVELOP TRAVELING EXHIBITS WHICH CAN BE USED TO SHOWCASE LOCAL HISTORY IN SCHOOLS. THESE MATERIALS WILL BE TAILORED FOR 3RD GRADERS WHO LEARN ABOUT THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY, 4TH AND 8TH GRADERS WHO STUDY NORTH CAROLINA HISTORY, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO STUDY WORLD AND U.S. HISTORY.202432569349301768

THIS 24' X 48', TWO-ROOM STRUCTURE, BUILT 1868-69 BY THE FEDERAL FREEDMEN'S BUREAU UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE AMERICAN MISSIONARY ASSOCIATION, IS THE ONLY SCHOOLHOUSE FOR FREEDMEN KNOWN TO REMAIN IN NORTH CAROLINA AND ONE OF ONLY A FEW (PERHAPS FIVE) REMAINING IN THE UNITED STATES. THE JOHNSTON COUNTY HERITAGE CENTER IS PARTNERING WITH THE HISTORIC SMITHFIELD FOUNDATION, OWNER OF THE SCHOOLHOUSE PROPERTY, TO RESTORE THE BUILDING TO ITS 1869 APPEARANCE AND TO OPEN IT FOR TOURS, LECTURES, COMMUNITY GATHERINGS, AND POSSIBLY FOR AN AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM, IN KEEPING WITH THE BUILDING'S ORIGINAL PURPOSE. BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, PLANS WERE BEING DISCUSSED REGARDING THE HIRING OF A SCHOLAR AND/OR STUDENT INTERN TO ASSIST IN DEVELOPING A PLAN TO INTERPRET THE SITE.202232519349300133
