2023North Carolina Humanities CouncilBlack Mountain College Museum Arts Center Asheville, NCA$20,000paidTHE FARM AT BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE, CO-CURATED BY DAVID SILVER AND BRUCE JOHANSEN, WILL BE ON VIEW AT BMCM+AC IN ASHEVILLE FROM SEPT 2024-JAN 2025. BUILT FROM A DECADE'S WORTH OF ORIGINAL ARCHIVAL RESEARCH, THE EXHIBITION FOLLOWS RENEGADE STUDENTS, FACULTY, FAMILIES, FARMERS, AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS AS THEY START AND SUSTAIN A CAMPUS FARM IN THE 1930S, BUILD A BETTER FARM IN THE '40S, AND WATCH IT ALL COLLAPSE IN THE '50S. THE EXHIBITION ESTABLISHES A NEW HISTORY OF BMCONE THAT SPOTLIGHTS THE VITAL CONTRIBUTIONS STUDENTS MADE TO THE FARM AND COLLEGE; THE WAR-TIME EFFORTS MADE BY AN ALL-FEMALE STUDENT BODY TO BUILD THE LAKE EDEN FARM; AND THE MANY LONG-LASTING COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN THE COLLEGE AND THE COMMUNITY, SHATTERING THE MYTH THAT BMC WAS DIVORCED AND DISTANT FROM ITS NEIGHBORS. FINALLY, THE EXHIBITION SHOWS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN COMMUNAL LIVING IS NO LONGER COMMUNAL, AND OFFERS THE FIRST EVER DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE FALL OF THE COLLEGE, A DRAMATIC AND OFTEN DANGEROUS STORY.202432569349301768
